Justin Luger Hosts 9th Annual HYPE Miami Awards

Firm partner Justin Luger recently hosted the 9th annual HYPE Miami Awards at Penthouse River Wharf.  The event featured a packed room of more than 100 guests celebrating South Florida’s next generation of leaders.  Justin has sequentially served as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s HYPE Miami young professionals committee for nearly 4 years, and sits on the Chamber’s Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.

Brooke Ehrlich Gives Presentation to IPMA-HR on Social Media in the Workplace

On Thursday, March 7, 2019, labor and employment attorney Brooke Ehrlich presented on “Social Media in the Workplace- Positive and Negative Impact and Implications” to the International Public Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR).  Brooke spoke about employers’ use of social media, creating and implementing effective social media policies, regulating employees’ social media use, and using social media in hiring decisions.

Owners in HOAs Beware: What You Don't Know About Eminent Domain May Hurt You

A recent decision from Florida’s First District Court of Appeal serves as a friendly reminder that those who own common area in homeowners associations are not treated the same as ordinary property owners – at least not in eminent domain proceedings.  In Leon County v. Lakeshore Gardens Homeowners’ Assoc. Inc., Leon County (“County”) sued the Lakeshore Gardens Homeowners’ Association (“Lakeshore HOA”) to acquire an easement over a portion of the common area in the Lakeshore Gardens neighborhood.  The Lakeshore HOA moved to dismiss by claiming (in part) that, because it does not have authority to act on behalf of over 100 property owners in the Lakeshore Gardens community, those owners were indispensable parties to the lawsuit and should have been named individually.  The trial court agreed and dismissed the County’s lawsuit.  The County appealed.

Firm Partners, Aleida Martinez-Molina, Eric Hockman, and firm attorney Lawrence Raab did a presentation for the Cuban Association of CPAs as part of their Annual Fiscal Seminar at the Renaissance Coral Gables on February 23rd.  Aleida presented on “Tax Issues in Chapter 11s,” Eric presented on “Cryptocurrencies,” and Lawrence Raab presented on the hot topic of “Opportunity Zones.”  In addition, City of Miami attorney Gigi Soliman spoke on “Affordable Housing.”
