Although Election Day results are in, and the medical marijuana bill was defeated, the issues of using marijuana for health reasons won’t go away.   Workplace writer for the Sun-Sentinel Marcia Heroux Pounds sought out advice from Weiss Serota Helfman’s own Brett Schneider to get his insight.  The fact is, people do use marijuana for medicinal purposes and 58 percent of the voting public approved this usage – but the bill required 60 percent to pass.  Nevertheless, doctors may still prescribe it.

“The employer could say, ‘I don’t care about your prescription, you’re fired anyway,’ ” says Brett in the article, which ran on the front page of the Sun-Sentinel on November 2, 2014.  Brett is further noted as the president of the Human Resources Association of Broward County, a position he attained in January of this year.  He comments that employers may take a more practical approach and accept the use of marijuana with a valid prescription.

Also of note, Brett is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the HR Certification Institute and Board Certified by The Florida Bar in Labor and Employment Law.

The firm has a strong understanding of the myriad of implications that are arising with changes in marijuana perceptions and uses.   Recently, Brett and firm partner Susan Trevarthen provided information in a workshop titled “Medical Marijuana – an Engaging Dialogue.”  Brett Schneider presented on the labor issues related to the issue while Susan offered insight on potential zoning and business regulations of marijuana-related uses.
