The State of Florida has a uniform building code entitled the “Florida Building Code” that governs construction of buildings across the State.  Local governments are preempted from adopting their own building code. However, some jurisdictions have gone through the necessary procedures to adopt local amendments to the Florida Building Code, which specifically apply to their jurisdiction.   On June 30, 2015, a new Florida Building Code will take effect. The new Code will apply to all new construction or rehabilitation projects with a permit application date of June 30, 2015 or later.  It is anticipated that the changes to the Code will enhance the safety of construction and promote sustainable buildings.  It is important for all contractors, developers and building officials to review the changes in order to ensure compliance with the new Code.
